How can you help save the world one Boston at a time
Fostering in your home as part of your family until they are healthy and any behavior issues modified or just caring for them long enough to get to know them well enough to place them in the best home possible is what fostering is all about.
Not all the Boston's that come to have health or behavior issues. Some just need to leave the home they are in, their person may have passed away or gone into a nursing home. They may come from an active family that just does not have time to give the attention that we know Boston's need to be happy. Others come from shelters and animal control/city pound or just off the streets.
We are always looking for volunteers to drive transport for the Boston's from their person or shelters. Most transports are on the weekends. We try to keep each leg in the transport to under two hours with most being about an hour. That way no one has to travel too far.
Occasionally we are asked to participate in adoption awareness events. We need people that understand what we do and why we are different from most rescues.
We are a small group of like minded people whose priority is saving as many Boston's as possible. We focus on nutrition, training and needed vet care. All are spayed or neutered, given needed shots and vet care, a wellness panel of at least 10 blood test and a fecal examination and micro chipped. They live as part of our family's until they are ready to go on to new homes. Vet expenses are paid by the group and when there is not enough money in our account to cover the bills I personally pay them. Fosters are given supplies depending on what we have on hand. Fosters are asked to feed, provide treats and toys.
We provide a harness, a blanket and at least one toy and chewy that is theirs and goes to their new home with them. We feed high quality holistic kibble as part of rehabilitating each Boston. Many behavior and health issues can be corrected with the right food. We believe in positive reinforcement training, the right food and love. Many times this is all that is needed to give them a sense of security and confidence. Some have never known a kind person or lived in comfort. Some are in dire condition and require longer than our average foster time. We strive to accomplish rehabilitation in one month. With some it's longer, those that are heart worm positive usually require four to six months and are our longest fosters. Thankfully we only get one or two a year. Sometimes when the right person for the is near us we let them go after 4 months, continuing their recovery in their new home. Normally I take the long term fosters and those with the worst behavior issues. Some come to us and we soon realize we can not place them in an adoptive home. Those live out their lives however long that may be with us, again usually me. We will not knowingly place a dog in a foster home that has any contagious condition or illness or has behavior issues that are beyond the foster family's comfort level.
Our foster application is the same one we send to people who want to adopt. Since we expect the same high standards of care for each foster we need the same information to place the right dog into our foster homes. It also helps fosters to understand what adopters go through. It's easier to explain our process if you've been through it yourself.
We also need people to assist with fund raising, any ideas are welcome.
Our process is long but we need the information or we would not ask. We match our Boston's with the best possible home for each Boston. In order to accomplish this we need to get to know them. Each Boston's happiness and well being is our priority. We are here for them first and foremost. Placing them in the right home is the best step to a successful adoption.
